Sep 13, Brian Robbins rated it really liked it Shelves: The last few chapters on Milton's theology, his concept of angels, and the Fall in general are also some of the most informative and interesting chapters in the book. I held this theory myself for many years, but I have now abandoned it. But in the end I love him all the more, and see more clearly than ever that he has no close contenders as the sou I knew this book would be hard-ish to get through, because it's more academic than anything I've read by Lewis.
Which would be best to read first?
Amazon Inspire Digital Educational Resources. Then Lewis talks a lot about heresy and whether or not it's there in Paradise Lost which I didn't much care about.
A Preface to Paradise Lost
In 5, he seems to be missing the doctrine of bodily resurrection, which he later so beautifully affirmed in The Last Battle. Rather than being an apology for his earlier and more grandiose depictions of Satan, Milton's purpose in portraying this decline of Satan's is to show the process of one's character who has allowed themselves to be ruled by injured merit, self-pity, prefwce utter self-focus.
The reader may choose to laugh at what he views to be a comic character, or he may decide to recognize the truth that Satan lives in a monomaniac selfishness of infinite boredom and yet WANTS to go on living that existence. Each of us takes selfish and dishonest steps every day, and we have all had a share in propogating misery.

It is much harder prefsce imagine a pure Mind than a diabolical one, given the fact that we ourselves are diabolical.
