I cannot wait for book two. Maybe it's just his style of writing, but I found the battle scenes to be a little dull as well. But what about this?!:

The cities are in turmoil as the Librarian's latest visit to procure "specimens" was seen as a sign for the San'Shyuum to rebel against the Forerunners. And when the two human characters left the scene, a lot of the life left the story as well.
It is the Builders who create the grand technology that facilitates Forerunner dominance over the known universe. Very well written sci fi book, told mostly from the perspective of cryputm young Forerunner. Life presents strife and death as well as joy and birth. The embarrassing fact is that I picked this up simply because it was a Halo book by a major science fiction writer.
The vast majority of the novel is spent mentioning her and we are only introduced to her physical form towards the very end. Greg Bear does a fantastic crtptum weaving this story together, and the world building is magnificent.
He is the son-in-law of Poul Anderson.
Thankfully, Cryptum is part of a trilogy with an arc most fans already understand. Each Halo has a powerful, energy-based weapon that can eliminate any life-forms with sufficient biomass to sustain The Flood in an entire star system.

This works cyrptum on its own, expanding upon their lives removes a lot of the mystery behind them which makes their civilisation so interesting. At first I struggled to get through the first couple of pages which fryptum me off to the book. There's still a lot about the lore I don't really understand, so I figured I'd try to get more into it with these books.
