Refresh and try again. The tones were that of an avuncular professor to primary school children 10 and under , which didn't work because no child that age is going to be reading this book. I would say, I went to the library last night looking for a nice fun intro to linguistics, something that would show off how interesting the subject is, without being academic and dense and not fun. That aside, there's an excellent range within the book across fascinating areas.

The Five-Minute Linguist: Bite-Sized Essays on Language and Languages by E.M. Rickerson
There are sixty short chapters, each starting off with a question such as "Are pidgins and creoles real languages? Towards the end, unfortunately, the book seemed to forget its target audience and several of the essays had portions encouraging children to train for specific jobs like interpreting.
I wish I had heard the radio series when it was running I'll probably look up the audio files at some point.

This seemed innocuous enough to be worth trying, since it's so brief. Oct 03, Aisha rated it it was amazing. No depth of exploration of the topics, and sometimes obvious ideas discussed. It was lknguist less informative than I'd hoped for. Easy to read, but a very basic level. Want to Read saving….

In my opinion there are a few too many chapters by language instructors trying to convenience the audience that we should all learn more languages and how to go about it, but each chapter was so short it didn't bug me too much. It's easy to read because each chapter is about three pages fivee and in layman's terms. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. No phonetic alphabet in sight, no talk of aspirated and unaspirated sounds, just really interesting discussions that anyone can understand and like.
