We know something is going on when several matches encased in an envelope is slid under the door which leads to my favourite scene in the play but it is still the wordplay that Pinter forces out of his characters' mouths that influence the true properties of the play; odd nuences dubm we in every day life ignore or pass on as regular "put on the kettle" or "put the kettle on," two phrases that are examined thoroughly in The Dumb Waiter.

As for the play itself it is a masterpiece of drama infused with light hearted comedy for anyone that's seen this at the Westend with Lee Evans and Jason Isaacs you'll understand. This is mysterious and both characters seem to be puzzled why these orders keep coming; the basement is clearly not outfitted as a restaurant kitchen. I think The Dumb Waiter falls into the latter category. They do not know who has hired them or who their victim will be.
